Aqua increase on hold...

A proposed $71.8 million rate hike affecting water and sewer customers of Aqua Pennsylvania is on hold.

The Republican Herald reports that State regulators voted to suspend and investigate the combined rate increases, which would raise nearly $67 million in annual revenue for water and almost $5.4 million for sewer services.

Under the proposals, the average monthly bill for a residential water customer would increase more than $9 per month, while the monthly bill for a residential wastewater customer would jump nearly $21.

Aqua, which filed in August for the rate hikes, said the primary reason for the increases is to recover $2.2 billion the company has invested in its distribution and treatment systems to improve drinking water quality and service reliability throughout its water and wastewater operations.

It last filed for rate hikes about seven years ago.
