Hotel taxes...

Schuylkill County will collect an additional $134,000 from hotel owners this year since taxes went up in July.

The county commissioners approved a budget resolution, Wednesday, to account for the additional revenue.

According to the Republican Herald, the board originally approved a 2 percent hike in hotel taxes in April to fund a new burn building for training firefighters and economic development.

The ordinance, which went into effect July 1, increased taxes on hotel room rentals from 3 percent to 5 percent for the next 10 years.

The Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau will continue to receive 3 percent while the rest will be distributed to the Schuylkill County Training Academy and the Schuylkill Economic Development Corp.

According to the budget resolution, the county treasurer’s office anticipates collecting an additional $134,000 in hotel rental taxes from July through December.
