Pottsville Police receive grant...

The Pottsville Bureau of Police will be boosting its manpower, after being awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The $125,000 grant was announced Oct. 3 and will pay for one officer. Pottsville Bureau of Police Chief Richard F. Wojciechowsky said work has already begun with Mayor James Muldowney, City Council and City Administrator Thomas Palamar to evaluate 2017 budget considerations and explore every economically responsible avenue to include this hiring for 2017 without any negative impact on the city tax base.

The department was one of 183 other law enforcement agencies nationwide to receive funding through the DOJ Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, or COPS, Hiring Program.

The program provides funding to hire or rehire law enforcement personnel. The city council must now improve an increase in the 23-officer force.
