The Mahantongo Street parking garage, in Pottsville, closed Friday, after a contractor doing maintenance and repair work found deteriorated structural reinforcing.
According to the Republican Herald, the contractor had begun work Aug. 1 that involved power washing, cleaning of the decks, painting parking lines and concrete repairs. In the process, they discovered broken post tension cables within the concrete, Bill Yarnell, vice president of Allegheny Restoration Inc., said Monday. In some places, the cables were gone.
Drivers are being told they can now park at the 84 Lumber Lot between Progress Avenue and Route 61.
There is no word if or when the structure will be re-opened.
