Michael D. Marchalk goes on trial today for what prosecutors allege was the killing of his father, the former Assistant District Attorney Gary D. Marchalk, on Father’s Day 2017.
According to the Republican Herald, Marchalk originally wanted to defend himself, but decided last month to have Assistant Public Defender Andrea L. Thompson handle his case.
He faces charges of first-, second- and third-degree murder, among other counts. If convicted of first- or second-degree murder, he faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole.
Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty in the case.
President Judge William E. Baldwin will preside over the trial which begins at 9 a.m. today.
