Republican lawmakers on a special House subcommittee said in a recent report that criminal conviction removes the need for any impeachment proceeding against Former state Attorney General Kathleen G. Kane.
The panel was formed last year to investigate whether Kane’s misconduct while in office warrants impeachment by the Legislature.
Four GOP panel members suggested the evidence concerning Kane meets the definition of “misbehavior in office” needed for impeachment.
The lawmakers decided that Kane’s conviction and resignation accomplishes the same objectives of an impeachment. Impeachment would lead to her removal from office and a ban on her holding any other public office in Pennsylvania.
Kane, a Scranton native, resigned in August after her conviction on nine criminal counts in Montgomery County Court for leaking grand jury information to a reporter and lying about it to another grand jury.
She was sentenced to 10 to 23 months in prison, but remains free while appealing the case.
