Emergency plan ok'd...

Schuylkill County leaders are making sure their residents stay safe in the event of a disaster.

Commissioners last week approved, on behalf of the office of Planning and Zoning, a pre-disaster mitigation agreement with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

The county was approved $81,250 in funding under the agreement and intends to use the grant to update its multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan. That will be a joint project between the planning office and the Emergency Management Agency.

The hazard mitigation plan is required under the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act, and must be updated every five years. Schuylkill’s plan will expire in 2019.

The grant requires a 20 percent local match with the county contributing $20,312, which was included in the 2017 planning budget.
