Hotel taxes in Schuylkill County are going up 2 percent to fund a new burn building for training firefighters and economic development.
According to the Republican Herald, county commissioners will vote next week on a resolution to increase taxes on hotel room rentals for the next 10 years from 3 percent to 5 percent.
The Schuylkill County Visitors Bureau will continue to receive 3 percent while the rest will be distributed to the Schuylkill County Training Academy and the Schuylkill Economic Development Corp.
The commissioners will use some of the new revenue to fund its $500,000 commitment to the training academy and its construction of a $1.4 million burn building that will be used to train emergency responders in the county.
