Schuylkill County is now accepting proposals for an intermediate punishment center.
The Republican Herald reports that the county commissioners gave their approval Wednesday to issue a request for qualifications from firms with experience building or managing intermediate placement facilities.
Their proposals can include retrofitting an existing building, constructing a new facility or contracting a firm that already operates an intermediate punishment center to accept 125 to 175 individuals into their program or run a center owned by the county.
An intermediate punishment center, also called a pre-release center, was proposed several years ago, but it was scrapped in 2011 when bids averaged $4.2 million.
It was about $1 million more than the board had budgeted. Submissions are due May 12.
The project is expected to be awarded on June 14, according to the request for qualifications.
