Changes possible at Hazleton Area...

Budget shortfalls could cause some major scheduling changes in the Hazleton Area School District.

One of the cost-saving measures being considered is cutting classes from five days a week to four, Tuesday thru Friday.

Avoiding mass job cuts is part of the reason the district is considering three less traditional cost saving measures, including half-day kindergarten, a pay-to-play sports policy, and changing the school schedule for 11,000 district students.

The district estimates emptying the halls for just one more day throughout the school year, for just a few months would save hundreds of thousands of dollars. If they took a more aggressive approach and did it for the entire school year it could save millions.

District officials say a decision on these changes will have to be made by the end of this month.

Public meetings on the matter are set for June 13th and 15th.
