Yuengling agrees to pay millions...

The U.S. Department of Justice reported Thursday, that D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc., Pottsville, has agreed to pay millions to settle issues, that occurred between 2008 and 2015, involving Clean Water Act violations at its Pottsville and Mill Creek breweries.

According to the Republican Herald, the Greater Pottsville Area Sewer Authority has had concerns, for more than a decade, about discharge from the Mahantongo Street brewery in particular. And discussions about alleged Clean Water Act violations have been discussed for many years.

Wendy Yuengling, chief administrative officer for Yuengling, said Thursday, that Yuengling has already made an investment toward that end by building “an $8 million state-of-the-art wastewater pretreatment system at its historic Pottsville brewery.” It went online March 8 at the former Yuengling ice cream factory at 420 Mahantongo St., Pottsville.

The two breweries involved in the case are Yuengling’s 501 Mahantongo St. facility, established in 1831, and its Mill Creek facility, built in 1999.
