The Pottsville Area School District is considering mandatory random drug testing.
According to the Republican Herald, the testing would be for all students in grades 7 to 12 who participate in extracurricular activities or who have parking privileges.
The proposed policy says among other reasons, it wants to protect the health of students; provide them access to treatment; prevent injuries, accidents and property damage stemming from drug use; and provide parents/guardians with the opportunity to maintain the safety of their student by enrolling them in the drug testing program.
Students will be assigned a random number that could be chosen for drug testing and middle school principals will determine what the drug testing days will be.
The board will discuss it further at the Aug. 1 board meeting.
