Michael D. Marchalk, who prosecutors allege killed his father, Gary D. Marchalk, on Father’s Day, in 2017 in their Ryan Township residence, has a new lawyer.
According to the Republican Herald, President Judge William E. Baldwin decided Monday that Assistant Public Defender Andrea L. Thompson will replace Assistant Public Defender Kent D. Watkins as Marchalk’s standby counsel.
As standby counsel, Thompson is allowed to answer questions that Marchalk asks.
However, since he has chosen to represent himself, which is his right under the U.S. Constitution, he must give the opening statement and closing argument, question witnesses and raise objections himself.
Marchalk’s trial is scheduled to start with jury selection on Nov. 30, with opening statements and testimony to begin on Dec. 10.
