KMART Closes...

by News Department on 06/22/15

After 35 years of serving Schuylkill County, Kmart, at the Schuylkill Mall, closed its doors for the final time this weekend. Kmart opened in 1980 and was one of the three original anchor stores at the mall with Sears and Hess.

Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications for Sears Holdings, said in February that the store was not renewing its lease that was set to expire in October.

Elaine Maneval, mall manager, said last week that she did not think the space was rented yet. She was notified in February of Kmart’s closure.

Kmart employed approximately 80 employees and Riefs said those eligible would receive severance and have the opportunity to apply at Sears and other Kmart stores.
