The deadline is near for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections to reveal what 2 State Prisons they plan on closing to save budget costs.
On January 6th, the Governor, along with the Department of Corrections announced that they would close or reduce population of 2 State Prisons by the end of the June 2017.
Five prisons are under consideration for closure including SCI Frackville.
Prior to the announcement of those listed for possible closure, a study was done that compared the 5 prisons on different criteria. Facts from that data has been provided and a list for SCI Frackville to remain open states that it is the Newest Prison, the Cheapest to Operate, the Highest Level Security Prison, the facility in the best condition, Next to Last in Upgrade Costs and Schuylkill County has the highest unemployment rate compared to the others on the list.
Schuylkill County Legislators also presented a petition with over 5,000 names to Governor Wolf asking for SCI-Frackville not to be closed.
The decision on which two prisons will close is expected later today.
