Polar plunge...

Twenty people braved the elements, Monday, to participate in the ninth annual Pine Creek Polar Bear Plunge.

Before the plungers entered the creek at 1:06 p.m., the outside air temperature was 5 degrees. The water was actually warmer at 33 degrees.

In comparison, the outside temperature last year was about 43 degrees and the water was 36 degrees.

The event benefits the Pine Creek Trout Nursery, a cooperative of the state Fish & Boat Commission and the Valley View Gun Club. Pine Creek Pete, the event’s mascot, did not row down the creek as he usually does — the top level was frozen.
