Meter increase...

Parking meter rates are going up.

According to the Republican Herald, the Pottsville Parking Authority voted at its monthly meeting Friday to reduce the time given for a quarter to 20 minutes in the central business district. Currently, a quarter will get 30 minutes at the parking meters.

The last increase was in March 2003 when rates went up at hundreds of meters in the city from 25 cents for an hour to 25 cents for 30 minutes. The rate increase will take effect when new parking meters are installed.

The new meters will accept quarters and drivers can park for up to eight hours, instead of a two-hour limit at the old meters. Drivers will also have the ability to use an app from Parkmobile to pay for parking.

Meters are enforced from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
