Republican and Democratic voters will have multiple candidates to choose from for nominations in the 9th Congressional District in the May 15 primary election.
In the 9th District, which includes all of Schuylkill, Carbon, Columbia and Montour counties and part of Luzerne County not in the 8th, and part of Berks and Northumberland counties, three Republicans and three Democrats filed nominating petitions by the deadline Tuesday.
A new state Supreme Court-imposed congressional district map that rewrote boundary lines forced some of the candidates to run for districts where they don’t live after they spent months campaigning for seats in existing districts.
The new districts go into effect next year, but voters will elect members of Congress in November.
