The Schuylkill County Prison Board is looking to renew its inmate housing agreements with other facilities after the average monthly census went up in February.
The prison had an average of 239 inmates in February, up from 221 in January, with an average of 53 inmates being housed at other facilities in February.
Prison board chairman and commissioner George F. Halcovage Jr. said the housing agreement with George W. Hill Correctional Facility, Thornton, is set to expire soon and although no inmates from the county are currently being housed there, Halcovage said the board will likely look to extend the agreement in case none of the closer facilities have space. The current agreement with the Delaware County prison is $60 a day per inmate.
The costs for the other facilities range from $60 to $72 a day per inmate.
After a three-month restriction on housing newly sentenced inmates last year, the county’s current agreement with state Department of Corrections does not allow the prison to exceed its approved capacity of 277.
