Each year, thousands of students looking for help paying for college log onto the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid website - also known as FAFSA.
The process is complicated.
The form asks for a variety of financial information from both the student and their parents. But earlier this month, with little notice, the IRS removed a helpful resource for users - its data retrieval tool which made it easier for applicants to transfer their federal income tax information from the IRS to the FAFSA, especially since the department of education is asking for 2015 data this year.
While the icon for the tool is still there - it's actually not active. Applicants have to manually enter the information from your tax return - delaying the process.
The National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators has encouraged the Department of Education to modify the FAFS and remove the link as to not create any more confusion.
