A Missouri company is now the official owner of the Schuylkill Mall, as it recorded the deed to the property on Monday.
NP New Castle LLC, Riverside, Missouri, bought the property from Lehighton lawyer William G. Schwab, who is serving as trustee in bankruptcy for former owner Empire Schuylkill LP.
The company thereby gained ownership of a property that opened in October 1980.
Located at Interstate 81 and Route 61 near Frackville, Schuylkill Mall has lost two of its major anchor stores, Kmart and Sears, within the last two years, leaving it with only one department store, The Bon-Ton. The largest other tenants remaining in the mall are Dunham’s sporting goods and Pearl Theater Stadium 8.
NorthPoint has not announced what it plans to do with the property, which is located in Blythe, New Castle, Ryan and West Mahanoy townships.
The recording of the deed generated $42,000 in real estate transfer taxes, of which Pennsylvania will receive $21,000.
