Theft Charges...

The former secretary-treasurer of Upper Bern Township, Berks County, was charged with stealing more than $80,000 from the township.

According to the Republican Herald, State police charged 34 year old Tonya J. Schaner, of Hamburg, who was employed by the township as the secretary-treasurer between Jan. 23, 2011, through Feb. 8.

Troopers said the investigation into the theft began on March 8, when Schaner was suspected of stealing money from the township while serving as its treasurer.

Schaner was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Andrea Book and released on $30,000 unsecured bail pending a preliminary hearing.
