Charges have been filed by Federal authorities, against a Lehighton man, for filing a false claim.
U.S. attorney Bruce D. Brandler filed the charges against Orwigsburg Postmaster Carl R. Bonser, for what he claimed was $6,500 in nonexistent travel expenses.
Authorities say Bonser asked the U.S. Postal Service for the monetary reimbursement from Jan. 1, 2016, to Oct. 31, 2016, for travel he did not take.
Bonser agreed to plead guilty to the charge and faces a fine of $250,000 along with a possible sentence of five years in prison. The agreement does not specify or limit what sentence, if any, prosecutors will recommend, except that it will not be beyond the legal maximum.
The U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General investigated the case, which is being prosecuted by assistant U.S. attorney Jenny P. Roberts.
Senior U.S. District Judge James M. Munley, Scranton, is presiding over the case.
