A Luzerne County judge ruled Tuesday, that a former deputy coroner in Carbon and Schuylkill counties is a sexually violent predator.
According to the Republican Herald, 60 year old Edward C. Smith, of Tamaqua, admitted to using social media to set up a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old boy who was actually an undercover cop.
Smith’s crime in Luzerne County stemmed from an undercover sting operation conducted by the state Attorney General’s Office in which Smith met an undercover agent posing as a 14-year-old boy on a social networking site.
In Schuylkill County, prosecutors allege Smith paid a teenage boy for sexual favors and to pose for photographs that were found on the defendant’s cellphone. The contact took place at Smith’s home starting in 2015 and occurred while the boy was 14 and 15.
Smith was sentenced to six to 20 years behind bars.
