A fire that destroyed an abandoned home in Gilberton on Sunday is being called suspicious.
According to the Republican Herald, Firefighters from Gilberton, Mahanoy Plane and surrounding communities were called to the area of 116 Island Road just before 7 p.m., and battled the blaze for more than 2 1/2 hours.
Frackville Police Chief Richard Bell, whose department provides police coverage for the borough, said Monday afternoon that he and borough fire officials are waiting for a state police fire marshal who will assist with trying to determine how the fire started.
Bell said that since the building has been abandoned for about 15 years and has no electricity or other utilities; the cause is being called suspicious.
