Two people were flown to hospitals Monday following a chain-reaction crash in Pottsville.
According to the Republican Herald, the crash occurred at 12:45 p.m., when for unknown reasons, 86 year old George Ondek, of Pottsville, who was driving eastbound on West Market Street, struck the rear of a Chevrolet Tracker that was stopped in the line of eastbound traffic on West Market Street.
City Police Chief Richard F. Wojciechowsky, said upon impact, the Tracker, which was driven by an un-named 58-year-old woman from Tuscarora, was forced into four other vehicles. City Fire Chief Todd March said city firefighters had to use the hydraulic Jaws of Life to cut off the roof and doors to free her. She was then flown to a medical facility for immediate treatment.
Ondek was also flown to a medical facility after being treated at the scene.
One other occupant, of a parked vehicle that was involved in the crash, was transported to a local medical facility for treatment of minor injuries.
No other injuries were reported.
In all, the crash involved six vehicles and knocked down a light pole in front of Trinity United Church of Christ at 316 W. Market St.
Wojciechowsky said the investigation is continuing and further information will be released when available.
