The Schuylkill County commissioners are asking the state Department of Corrections to end its restriction on the Schuylkill County prison.
In May, the state ordered the prison to stop accepting new prisoners until it reduced its inmate population, which had reached more than 300 inmates. Since then, the prison has not been able to accept new prisoners sentenced between six months and five years.
The county was able to work out contracts with several other prisons in the state, costing between 60 and 65 dollars a day, per inmate. Meaning, the county is spending about 20-dollars more a day per inmate than it would if the prisoners were kept in Schuylkill County.
Commissioners contacted the state Department of Corrections on Monday, and are waiting for a response.
