A press release regarding changes for the 2016-17 school year in the Pottsville Area School District was sent out Thursday to notify parents that some students who have been riding the bus to school at Pottsville Area will have to find another way to get there this year.
The district has decided to cut back on its transportation services by six buses, due to the lack of state funding over the last several years and continued increasing operational costs.
Earlier this year, the school board was considering offers to outsource its transportation or selling off its entire fleet of buses.
The press release stated that the Pottsville Area School District will transport all eligible students in accordance with current state and federal guidelines to those resident students that meet the requirements to receive free pupil transportation as set forth in the Pennsylvania Public School Code of 1949. A primary student’s principal residence must be 1.5 miles or greater from the school in which he or she is enrolled to receive transportation services. In order for secondary students to be eligible for transportation, the student must reside 2.0 miles or greater from the school in which he or she is enrolled to receive transportation services.
However, there will be some exceptions for students with special needs whose IEP requires them to receive transportation.
