Budget cuts to libraries...

The Pottsville Area School District has made more cuts to its budget, which will lead to two libraries without annual funding from the district this year.

According to the Republican Herald, the school district decided not to include contributions of $55,000 to the Pottsville Free Public Library and $2,300 to the Port Carbon Public Library in its 2016-17 budget.

Although the Port Carbon library receives a much smaller amount from the school district, $2,300 still makes up a significant portion of its budget.

Meanwhile, the Pottsville library is still recovering from state funding cuts of nearly 50 percent several years ago when the staff was reduced by about a third.

The library currently has 13 employees, which includes several part-time positions. The board is now planning to meet to discuss options.
