Schuylkill County schools are taking a tougher stance on truancy, just like many other schools across the state, due to changes in the school code that goes into effect this school year.
According to the Republican Herald, the Pennsylvania School Boards Association claims the former truancy regulations were outdated and needed to reflect today’s society.
As part of Act 138 of 2016, an amendment to the School Code of 1949, more responsibility shifts from Children & Youth agencies to school districts.
With the changes, the districts will be taking over this responsibility and, in most cases; the agency will not become involved unless the school’s efforts are not successful.
Each district will also develop its own policy regarding number of absences permitted before a written doctor’s excuse is needed.
