Two fire companies in Schuylkill County are among those receiving federal funding for new equipment. U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has awarded Assistance to Firefighters Grants to Minersville Fire Rescue, in Minersville, Hometown Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, in Tamaqua, and five fire companies in Carbon County.
The funds will be distributed through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The purpose of the AFG is to award competitive grants directly to fire departments to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first-responder personnel. Since 2001, the AFG program has provided about $6.1 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, training, and firefighting and emergency vehicles.
