John Bova, of Lower Shaft, the son of lost Sheppton miner Louis Bova, unveiled a state historical marker Saturday near the site where his father is entombed.
77 year old J. Ronnie Sando, of Hazleton, believed to be the lone surviving Sheppton rescuer and former employee of Pagnotti Enterprises, was also on hand to help with the unveiling ceremony, marking the 52nd anniversary of the Sheppton Mine Disaster, in which three miners were trapped 320 feet underground for 14 days, captured the world's attention in 1963.
Miners Henry Throne and David Fellin were rescued, however, despite heroic attempts, Louis Bova was never found.
