Criminal charges are expected to be filed against state Attorney General Kathleen Kane as early as today.

According to the Republican Herald, Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman has been investigating the Scranton native since April for perjury and other offenses related to a grand jury investigation of her.

The grand jury accuses Kane of lying about her release of information from a 2009 grand jury probe to a Philadelphia newspaper, then taking action to cover it up.

The attorney general is also under investigation for firing James P. Barker, a top prosecutor who testified before the grand jury investigating whether she leaked the confidential information to the newspaper.

Reached Wednesday night, the attorney general’s spokesman Chuck Ardo said he could not confirm criminal charges were imminent.

Kane would likely appear in Montgomery County voluntarily to face the charges.
