A confirmed case of rabies has been found in a raccoon in Lake Wynonah.
According to the Republican Herald, Alissa Emerich, a veterinary technician at Mountain Shadow Veterinary Hospital in Wayne Township, noticed the raccoon about 2 p.m. Friday.
Testing at the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System, Harrisburg, confirmed the raccoon tested positive for the virus which affects the nervous system, causes encephalitis, a swelling of the brain and is usually transmitted by the bite of an infected animal.
Rabies can result in death but can be prevented with pet vaccinations.
The Department of Health advises that people can also be exposed the virus and should seek medical attention if they believe they have been, because after symptoms begin, treatment is unsuccessful.
