Pennsylvania State Police are again warning residents about a phone scam involving callers claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service.
Authorities say the callers demand money for back taxes and solicit personal information.
In many cases, the victims are threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a driver’s or business license if they refuse to pay. The scam is being reported across the United States and involves a caller claiming to be an IRS employee, who uses false names and IRS identification badge numbers.
Police say the callers are quite convincing, but remind residents that the IRS will never call to demand immediate payment, nor will they call regarding taxes owed without first having mailed a notice, nor will the IRS threaten to contact law enforcement to arrest a person, require specific payment methods such as prepaid debit cards or ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
