Ambulance company to close...

The Nuremberg Community Ambulance Association is ending its service, after 48 years, due to a lack of volunteers and funding and new regulations requiring additional training.

The Republican Herald reports that the association sent 90-day notifications to the communities it serves, which include Black Creek and North Union townships, and parts of East Union, Hazle and Beaver townships.

Steve Bruno, association president, said they attempted to get funding from the federal SAFER grant program, which pays for staffing, but the program is geared toward fire companies, not ambulances.

He speculated that other ambulance providers, such as Sugarloaf Township, Valley Regional, Ringtown, Shenandoah and West Hazleton, would be able to provide services to the communities affected by the closure.
