The City of Pottsville was awarded a $40,000 grant for body cameras for it police department.
According to a Department of Justice press release, the funding comes from the Office of Justice Programs’ Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Fiscal Year 2016 Body-Worn Camera Policy and Implementation Program.
Pottsville Police Chief Richard F. Wojciechowsky along with Capt. John Morrow applied for the grant earlier this year.
The program started last year due to a recommendation by The President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing that law enforcement agencies use technology to strengthen relations with communities.
Wojciechowsky said the funding provided will not cover the entire program and noted that the city had to pledge the necessary funds to complete the program in conjunction with any grant money that was awarded.
There is no timetable yet as far as when the funding will be released.
