Even with warm weather still in the forecast, county managers with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation are preparing for winter.
PennDOT’s District 5 supervisors, managers, construction and organizational support staff have already attended the Snow Academy, which is meant to update them on any new technologies, as well as to answer their questions about safety, equipment maintenance and materials.
One of the newest technologies, that was unveiled last winter, is the Automated Vehicle Location system, which is tied into the PA 511 website. The system allows PennDOT, along with the public, to know where the snowplows are every 15 minutes.
Last year, the AVL system was on a limited number of trucks. This winter, the system will be on all of the department’s newer trucks.
Statewide, PennDOT has more than 2,600 snowplow trucks.
