State leaders are warning the public of Carfentanil, a dangerous opiate, that is 100 times more potent than fentanyl and 10,000 times stronger than morphine.
According to the Republican Herald, Carfentanil is a veterinary drug used to sedate large animals. The drug can be lethal to anyone who comes into contact with it, and is sometimes mixed with heroin.
According to the National Institutes of Health, Carfentanil can be absorbed through the skin, inhalation, orally or ingested and affects the opioid receptors in the body which can slow breathing, affects the cough reflex and constricts the pupils.
It is not safe for humans and even a small dose is deadly.
Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David J. Moylan III said there are no drug-related deaths that he knows of involving Carfentanil in the county, however the drug is suspected of contributing to 174 fatal overdoses in Cincinnati, is becoming more widespread.
