Tax Hike possible...

The Pottsville Area school board on Wednesday unanimously voted to approve the preliminary budget for the 2017-18 school year that includes a tax hike.

According to the Republican Herald, the rate is now 35.15 mills. The preliminary budget, as prepared, calls for taxes to be increased to 38.665 mills.

In order to do that the district must seek approval from the state Department of Education or submit the matter to voters through a referendum.

The state’s Act 1 index only permits an increase of 1.2654 mills. School board President John Boran read a resolution approving the preliminary budget and authorizing a referendum exception and final budget notice before the vote.

In part the resolution says the administration and board will continue to examine the budget before final adoption by June 30.
