New meter rates went into effect Tuesday in Pottsville along with the installation of refurbished meters.
According to the Republican Herald, a quarter now buys drivers 20 minutes instead of 30 in the central business district. The rates in the rest of the city remain at 50 cents an hour which they have been for 16 years.
The Pottsville Parking Authority voted to increase rates in February and the city council approved the hike March 11.
There are about 600 meters in the city, between 30 and 50 years old, of which 400 are being replaced in conjunction with the rate hike.
