PennDOT clears bridge...

Pieces of reinforced concrete that were hanging on rebar stakes at the Columbia Street Bridge, in Schuylkill Haven, were removed Tuesday.

According to the Republican Herald the concrete was dangling from two places on the north side of the bridge.

Ron Young, district press officer for PennDOT Engineering District 5, Allentown, said concerns about the hanging debris were reported to PennDOT officials Monday.

Young said the debris posed a danger to anyone who might have been in the water underneath it but was no threat to motorists or pedestrians.

He reaffirmed the bridge’s safety for everyday usage, saying if it wasn’t safe, they wouldn’t allow vehicles or pedestrians to use the bridge or the southern sidewalk.

The northern sidewalk however, had been closed by the state Department of Transportation on April 20.
