Building bridges between the police department and the community is the goal of a new language initiative launched in Hazleton.
Hazleton has a growing Latino population and officers have faced challenges in recent years communicating with some of its residents so Dominican house will now begin providing translators for the police to communicate to residents who don’t speak English.
Officers will be able to connect with translators over the phone and will be also be able to access the same information on computers inside their cruisers.
The city will use grants to pay for the translators.
